The Green Building Worldwide Fellows Program provides selected participants with applied exposure to the forces transforming buildings, infrastructure, energy, technology, policy, and capital.

Preparing Emerging Leaders for the Future of Building Performance

Fellows work within a multidisciplinary environment where research is connected to real market conditions, technical questions are considered alongside financial and policy constraints, and ideas are developed into decision-ready intelligence.

The program is designed to help emerging professionals strengthen their analytical capabilities, expand their understanding of the built environment, and produce work that meets professional and executive standards.

From Academic Knowledge to Applied Intelligence

The built environment is becoming more complex. Building performance can no longer be evaluated through a single discipline. Decisions involving energy, technology, electrification, resilience, compliance, infrastructure, incentives, financing, and implementation must increasingly be considered together.

The GBW Fellows Program introduces participants to this interconnected operating environment.

Through structured research, collaborative assignments, executive programs, and selected project-based work, Fellows learn how to examine an issue, identify the material risks and opportunities, and communicate findings clearly to decision-makers.

The objective is not simply to observe the market. It is to understand how credible research and disciplined analysis can support better building, investment, policy, and delivery

decisions.

Fellowship assignments may address subjects across GBW’s principal areas of intelligence and advisory work:

High-Performance Buildings

Building systems, energy efficiency, electrification, resilience, indoor environmental quality, water performance, materials, and portfolio modernization.

Energy and Infrastructure

Grid conditions, distributed energy resources, energy storage, microgrids, utility constraints, speed-to-power, and infrastructure readiness.

Technology and Data

Building technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics, controls, analytics, cybersecurity, technology diligence, and performance measurement.

Policy and Compliance

Building-performance standards, emissions requirements, permitting, public policy, regulatory developments, and compliance strategy.

Capital and Incentives

Public incentives, tax credits, utility programs, project finance, capital-stack considerations, underwriting, and the financial implications of building performance.

Delivery and Commercialization

What Fellows May Do

Depending on the fellowship cycle, organizational priorities, and available assignments, Fellows may:

  • Research emerging building, energy, technology, policy, and capital developments

  • Prepare executive briefs, market analyses, issue summaries, and presentation materials

  • Evaluate technologies, programs, policies, projects, and market opportunities

  • Support data gathering, comparative analysis, mapping, and performance frameworks

  • Contribute to GBW briefings, courses, summits, articles, and intelligence products

  • Participate in collaborative assignments involving GBW and its wider ecosystem

  • Develop a defined research or strategic project under GBW guidance

  • Present findings and recommendations in a professional format

 

Assignments are structured to strengthen analytical discipline, professional judgment, collaboration, and executive communication.

The Fellowship Experience

GBW Fellows are expected to approach their work with the standards required in a professional advisory and intelligence environment.

Participants may receive:

The nature, duration, format, and scope of each fellowship may vary according to the cohort and assignment.

Professional Standards

Fellows are expected to:

  • Meet agreed deadlines and project milestones

  • Produce accurate, well-supported, and clearly presented work

  • Document sources, assumptions, and analytical decisions

  • Participate responsibly in team discussions and reviews

  • Protect confidential, proprietary, and restricted information

  • Disclose potential conflicts of interest

  • Follow all applicable GBW policies and project requirements

 

Confidentiality, intellectual-property, attribution, and permitted-use terms may apply to fellowship assignments. Participation does not authorize a Fellow to speak or act on behalf of GBW unless expressly approved.

 

Application Process

Applicants should submit:

  1. A current résumé or curriculum vitae

  2. A statement of no more than 300 words explaining their area of interest and the value they hope to contribute

  3. One relevant work sample, such as a research brief, analysis, presentation, model, dashboard, design project, or published article

  4. Current availability and preferred fellowship period
